Press Releases and Special Announcements

  • Heart's Desire Auction, Saturday, February 4, 6:30 PM - Click here for the catalog (PDF)

The Heart's Desire Auction, our annual fund-raiser for UUMAN, was truly a gala evening to dine, socialize and of course, win the wonderful, imaginative goods and services offered for bid. Some of the intriguing items included a 4-night Jamaican vacation for two, tickets to a local film festival, lessons in stand-up comedy, and much more. To all who contributed these valuable and ingenious prizes, who generously bid on them, and who organized, cleaned, cooked, served, decorated, dreamed big and managed magnificently: from the bottom our hearts, thank you for creating this memorable event. A hearty thank-you to all the members, friends and neighbors of UUMAN!

  • Winter Concert

On December 11th, a concert dedicating our newly donated grand piano was held in the Sanctuary. Led by our Music Director, Huu Mai, talented musicians from inside and outside UUMAN performed a diverse repertoire, from classical to Broadway. Performers and audience all had a wonderful time!

With this new instrument, we may look forward to enjoying more concerts at UUMAN in the future. Many thanks to the generous donors and the excellent performers.

  • Radical Hospitality

Our Social Justice Action Committee voted to partner with a Unitarian congregation in India, in support of our theme of radical hospitality at UUMAN. The application process requires a photo of the congregation, and here we (or many of us) are!

  • Kate Puzey Peace Corps Volunteer Protection Act

Official White House Photo by Pete Souza

President Barack Obama looks at a photograph of Kate Puzey as he greets her brother, David Puzey, and other guests in the Oval Office, Nov. 21, 2011.

Kate Puzey, daughter of Lois Puzey from nearby Cumming, was brutally murdered while serving in the Peace Corps in Benin, after reporting sexual misconduct against a co-worker. In Kate's memory, Lois, her family and friends  launched a campaign for legislation to protect Peace Corps whistleblowers. Georgia Senator Johnny Isakson was also a supporter.

This November, the President signed the Kate Puzey Peace Corps Volunteer Protection Act of 2011, which improves the preventative measures and the response of the Peace Corps in cases of crime and sexual assault of Peace Corps volunteers.

  • Making room at the table:

Rev. Paul Daniel of UUMAN joined with other leaders of Unitarian Universalist congregations in the Atlanta area in signing the following letter that was submitted for publication to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

"What’s good for Georgia is that we base our social policies on traditional spiritual values of compassion and hospitality. . . "

Read the complete letter, and post your own comments, on the Standing On the Side of Love blog.

The AJC published an edited version of the letter in its editions on April 27, 2011.

  • Please refer to our Online Calendar for current calendar of activities at UUMAN. (Please submit all meeting requests and calendar information to calendar@uuman.org.)
  • Check out the U2U on-line bulletin board! If you're planning to sell your piano, barter baby-sitting for bookkeeping services, hunt for a Honda, or network for a new job, you will want to check this out. The bulletin board is a way for UUMANites, as well as any other members of the public who may be interested, to share announcements, plan excursions, offer services, and have a virtual garage sale. • Interfaith Youth and IRC
    Thanksgiving Dinner

The Interfaith Youth Group, also known as Faith Exchange, hosted a THANKSGIVING DINNER on Saturday November 19 for the International Rescue Committee. The IRC is an agency that settles newly arrived refugee families in the Atlanta area.

Youth from the Hamzah Islamic Center and UUMAN came together to help host a party for 200 people, where we shared this quintessential American Holiday with our new "brothers & sisters" from many lands.

MANY THANKS TO YOU ALL!A Heart-Felt Thanks for the fabulous Heart's Desire Auction ...

  • UUMAN Play Group Thursday Mornings

We meet in Discovery Hall at 10:00 AM. This is a thriving group throughout the year, of caregivers with babies, toddlers, preschoolers and homeschoolers.

Summertime is particularly fun because we have our school-age children join us. For more information, find us on Facebook or contact Kara Sweeney:

  • The Mountain Retreat and Learning Center offers a beautiful setting for programs, retreats, and R&R. A few years ago, a groupA Heart-Felt Thanks for the fabulous Heart's Desire Auction ... of UUMANites went to The Mountain's New Year's program and had a wonderful time. We have the pictures to prove it!

On October 30, 2011, our Ministry with Children and Youth sponsored a Halloween party with costumes, candy and the kick-off of Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, the United Nations Children's fund.

Our super-heroes, princesses, fire-fighters and magical creatures raised a new record: $ 300.50. Thanks to the young ones, families, donators and volunteers who made it possible.

This is an important multi-generational event for UUMAN. Younger children feel proud of the contribution they can make through this activity. The youth group created an awesome haunted house and maze for all to enjoy. We are already working on ideas for next year,  to make it even more participatory and fun for all ages.
